This week I discovered sir Was. He has a very interesting story. This Swedish guy, who also lived in South Africa was educated as saxophone player and played in the band for José Gonzalez.
He dreamt of a life as musician but waited for ten years to bring out his own first album 'Digging a Tunnel'. The album reflects his previous influences that he got from living in different countries. He discovered pan-African rhythms & sounds, traveling through Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Aside of all the instruments that he plays himself (!), he uses samples and sounds from daily life.
In short, a lovely mixture of my most favorite music styles: hiphop, pop, soul, free-jazz en downtempo elektronica.
I am very attracted by this eclectic style and he proves that your location influences your creativity and even personality (which I can relate to). Listening to this album almost brings you to all places that he went before and reflects the aspect of diversity that I like so much.
My fav songs are 'In the midst' (I love love love the bass and the hiphop aspect), 'Bomping' (best song ever to dance on) and 'Leave it here' (very nice example of downtempo elektronica).
